POWER VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY CLUB NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2007 Hi Everyone, Hope you had a chance to watch the championship NCAA match. Penn State rallied in the 5th game to win the title. What a great match. For future great matches and championships, here is some club news and information to put on your calendars and to keep in your memory file. This is long, like I said, so read carefully. 1. Website Very shortly you will see a remodeled website, then what is currently online. We are in a website designer transition and changing technicians. Within the next coupIe of weeks aII of the updated information, with teams, directions, tournaments wiII be posted for all teams. Thank you ahead of time for your patience as we work through some growing areas. I am excited about the new changes that are coming. 2. January 3rd & 4th 2008 New Year's Clinic @ the Hollis Center from 9:00 - 2:00p.m. each day. Lunch is included in the cost. Please see the attached flyer for all the information. Coach Ramos and I will be leading this with some of our other staff coaches as well. This is open for girls and boys playing club or not, if you know people who would be interested that played on your teams, please pass the flyer along. Register before 12/31 and save. Space is limited. 3. January 16 (Wednesday) Mandatory Ref Clinic for all Players and Coaches. This will be held at Deltona High School Gymnasium from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. We are joining Volusia Volleyball Club that night, (this is the Volleyball Club for Deltona High girls) All girls and coaches will need to know how to be an up ref, down ref, scorekeep and line judge. Every team has reffing responsibilities at tournaments. Some rules, signals, and scorekeeping are different in club, then the regular high school season. (i.e. Liberos are not allowed to serve in club) All girls will need to have a whistle w/ a black, gold, white or combination of the colors for a lanyard at the clinic and brought to each tournament. Please be at Deltona High by 6:20p.m., park in the student parking lot. Gold and Black teams will be sent directions and they will be up on the website too. 4. January 18th (Friday) Black and Gold Scrimmage Night & Club Parent Meeting @ the Hollis Center. Schedule: 5:00 - All Black and Gold Setters 5:30 - 7:15/7:30 All teams scrimmage, Parents may watch 7:15/7:30 - 8:15/8:30 Parent/Athlete Meeting This will be a great night as all the teams will be competing against each other. Immediately following we will have a club parent meeting to go over club season in general, upcoming tournaments, nutrition, and other important information as well as answering any questions that you may have. 5. Nutrition On the lines of nutrition, during club season, please do not drink sodas, energy drinks, high sugared drinks {i.e. gatorade, powerade, etc.}, even caffeinated beverages. So what is left to drink you ask? Increase your water intake. (A rule of thumb, drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. If you weigh 100lbs., drink 50 oz. of water per day, etc.) You will feel better and have more energy. Also, stay away from fried and fast food. What we put in our body will either give us energy or take it away. Something I am learning is to try and eat more God made foods, rather than man made foods. You will understand more of this at the Parent Meeting. 6. January 26th & 27th, Saturday/Sunday AAU Classic @ the Orange County Convention Center (near Sea World) This is for all teams. *** The AAU committee has asked each coach to have a copy of each players birth certificate on hand. We will need you to turn in a copy of your birth certificate by Jan.18th at the parent meeting. Gold teams, give your copies to Coach Ramos, Black Teams, give it to me. More information will be given about this tournament at the Parent's Meeting. There will be a spectator admission fee and parking fee. Begin to think of people to join for a carpool. 7.Tournaments in general Specifics about each tournament usually comes out a week before hand. i.e locations, pool play and other information. As soon as I get the information, it will be posted on the website, all the coaches will receive it and teams will be informed. Directions to all venues will be posted on the website. Just a reminder, one day tournaments will start at 9:00 a.m. and a coaches meeting at 8:30 a.m.. Two day tournaments will start at either 8:00am for the morning wave or 2:00pm for the afternoon wave and and they will finish about 7:00/8:00 p.m. 8. PVA 15's Tournament - February 2nd We will be hosting this tournament @ the Hollis Center. 14 Black, 15 Black and 15 Gold will be playing here that day. Since we are hosting, we will need parents to help with admission, concessions, tournament store, set up and clean up. There will be a sign up list at the parent meeting. 9. Weighted vests We have jump and strength training twice a week during our practices for Black Teams. Gold teams are more than welcome to take advantage of that on Fridays $15 for the entire season, if you want to come to the Hollis center. We are going to possibly try to work something in during Gold's practices. The trainer, Doug McDaniel's, daughter Nikki, wears a weighted vest during our beginning running and footwork exercises and the jumping part. Using this will help increase speed as well as your vertical jump. I know other girls have inquired about it. Here is a website I found with tax included and free shipping, if you are interested in purchasing one to use. This is not required, but optional. It would be great to use at home when you run. This one has free shipping and tax is included. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EWE2YO?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=dealtime-sg-ret-20&li nkCode=asn 10.
