The Organization Power Volleyball Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of volleyball in the Southwest Volusia County and surrounding areas. We are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt entity as an affiliated organization under the Amateur Athletic Union of the U.S. Inc.’s group determination ruling. Introduction/Philosophy The purpose of Power Volleyball Academy is to give every girl that is interested in the Southwest Volusia County and surrounding areas, the chance to learn and enhance their skills in the sport of volleyball. The name of the academy is based on the truth, that “God does not give us a spirit of fear, but rather one of POWER, of love and of self-discipline.” It is a visual of the physical strength they can have as an individual, through teamwork as well as spiritual strength through prayer and God’s Word. PVA is completely dedicated to providing its athletes with the technical, tactical and physical training needed to reach their highest possible potential. We strive to help each and every player regardless of age or ability. We want to teach and advance the skills and techniques in each girl that participates through structured and disciplined practices and tournaments. When athletes are young, it is easy for players and parents to make the mistake of getting caught up in trying to find the best team to play on or trying to play with their friends. In the search to play on the best team, however, players often overlook the most important element of long-term growth in the sport of volleyball, which is the training and development of individual skills. College coaches do not recruit elite teams; they recruit elite players with elite skills. By providing the best possible training and developing the skills of each athlete, we can provide the best possible club experience for each athlete. We want to encourage and assist girls in reaching their goals and dreams to play volleyball in college and in life. We believe that being involved in sports will give girls valuable life experiences, the appreciation of hard work, self discipline, respect, commitment and intense training. This volleyball academy is designed for high school, middle school and elementary age athletes. Power Volleyball Academy will field teams in various age classifications sanctioned by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). We understand that we are providing a service to you, the players and parents, not the other way around. This understanding is what drives us to provide the best possible club experience for everyone involved. “Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it."- Lou Holtz, college football coach About the AAU The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sport. During its early years the AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic Games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level. The philosophy of "Sports for All, Forever" is shared by nearly 500,000 participants, and over 50,000 volunteers. The AAU is divided into 57 distinct Associations. These Associations annually sanction more than 34 sports programs, 250 national championships, and over 10,000 local events. Master Coach Concept/Systematic Approach to Training Our desire here at PVA is to have each athlete receive the same comprehensive training as everyone else in her age group regardless of individual or team skill level. In most clubs, each athlete is at the mercy of his or her individual coach and can result into inefficient and poorly organized practices. The master coach is in charge of developing and implementing the practice plan for all the athletes an making sue that all the involved coaches understand the practice plan, thereby assuring each athlete the same high quality training during practice. Having a systematic approach to training, players can continue to develop and improve each year and build on what they learn each season instead of starting over again each year with a new coach. Life Lessons Words and concepts such as Commitment, Sacrifice, Responsibility, Accountability, Dedication and Perseverance have great value in not only athletics, but all areas of our lives, when approached positively, athletics teaches life skills. Our athletes learn the lessons of winning and losing. Winning with grace. Winning without false pride that causes future failure. Losing with honor and respect for the opponent. Our athletes learn how to deal with pressure. The butterflies an athlete feel when she serves game point? Not unlike the butterflies she feels when walking in the room to take the SAT. Our athletes learn respect for teamwork. The best player on a team cannot succeed by herself. The contributions of every player on the team are important. We also want our players to understand what it means to be part of a team and what the words TEAM an TEAMMATE really stand for-a group of people who share a common goal together and understand and agree to make the sacrifices necessary to make that goal become a reality Our athletes learn the importance of goal setting and how hard work in preparation leads to success. They learn to approach practice as a time to change how they play, for the better. Doing the wrong thing more often is not much help. It is better to change, and do the right thing. It remains true that much of an athlete’s advancement and improvement is still up to the individual. Good work habits and commitment are necessary for top success as an elite player. And God given gifts of athletic talent, size and speed are empowering. But this athlete also needs elite training and positive structure. Players from beginners to seasoned veterans, who have a sincere desire and commitment to improve, have found that AAU club participation will maximize their chance for success. If you share our philosophy and our commitment to excellence, we hope that you will consider Power Volleyball Academy. Let us succeed in helping you succeed. As part of PVA there will be an emphasis on team building activities within the program. Frequently Asked Questions Can athletes participate in other sports? Yes, of course. PVA athletes are allowed to play other sports. When you know what team you’re on and receive your practice and competition schedule then you will be able to see any conflicts and make proper arrangements. We ask that players inform us if they are participating in another sport so we can make that necessary arrangements for their team as a whole if there are going to be conflicts. Some athletes have chosen as a goal to play volleyball at the collegiate level and they must understand that serious training and competition is necessary for a player to reach their potential and possibly achieve their goal. Is there a tryout fee? Is there a tryout deposit required? No and No. We are assuming if you try-out for Power you will be playing for PVA. Can I still make the club if I did not play here last year? Absolutely. We have an OPEN tryout for everyone and anyone. It does not matter if a new player played elsewhere last season; this is a new season and a fresh start. How many players are on each team? We strive to have 8-10 players on each team. More than 10 makes it difficult for coaches to give all players playing time and less than ten can result in teams being short players in case of injury and/or conflicts. Do all players get “equal” playing time? This is a tricky question because there is no such thing as “equal” playing time in volleyball. Volleyball is different from other sports in that it is not a timed game; there are no innings, no quarters or halves to base playing time. Due to the nature and speed of the game, you cannot judge “time” by rotations or points in volleyball either. We understand that all players practice so they can play in games. We strive to give all players “fair” playing time based on practice, ability, attendance, skills, positions, situations, etc. Other questions to be discussed: How many teams are we going to have in each age division and program? How/when are teams and players selected? Program Fees (Based on up to 10 girls) - $600 (January – April) All fees include: AAU Membership, Uniform Package (1 Jersey, 1 spandex, 1 warm-up, 1 pr.
